ABSTRACT:

Femur is the largest bone in the human body and plays a very important role on locomotion. Sometimes bone malformations may cause different problems, such as dwarfism or bone tumors. In case of oncological problems, surgical resection is followed by the use of allografts for bone defect reconstruction. Allograft stabilization is achieved using osteosynthesis plates, however, currently there is no standard of care established regarding the number of osteosynthesis platesrequired to ensure the best gratft stabilization and the shortest patient recovery. This study compares numerical and experimental models of femur resection with an interposed allograft considering the use of one or two osteosynthesis plates. Digital image correlation was used to analyze displacements and strain distribution in the surface of synthetic femurs. The application of a second osteosynthesis plate leads to greater stabilization of the bone and lower stress in the plates and screws
