One-leaf stone masonry walls: geometric characterization and structural behavior

ABSTRACT:

In the context of a PhD thesis, the structural behavior of one-leaf granite masonry walls, typical of most of the old buildings in Porto historical center, was studied. The identification of the more frequent typologies of walls was based on geometric and material records of real walls from several case studies by applying methodologies and geometric indicators to quantify the irregularity. The mechanical characterization was made resorting to a large testing program of walls built in laboratory, based on the outcome of a reference study which involved experimental testing of real walls. This analysis allowed quantifying several mechanical parameters (strength, deformability, ductility, energy dissipation capacity) and evaluating the geometry influence on walls structural response, which is scarcely addressed in the literature.
