Experimental behaviour of innovative splice joints between tubular sections

ABSTRACT:
Tubular structures have an efficient structural behaviour; however, their use is frequently impaired due to the difficulties associated with the design and execution of joints. This work aims to develop and establish the effectiveness of innovative configurations of splice bolted joints between tubular sections, in terms of structural behaviour and aesthetic performance. Bolts with salient head, countersunk bolts and socket bolts were used in the conception and design of bolted joints. The experimental behaviour of the analysed joints, namely the resistance and the collapse modes, were compared with the corresponding design models in Eurocode 3, Parts 1.1 and 1.8.
