ABSTRACT:

With the aim of developing new numerical models to analyse the dynamic behaviour of dam-reservoir-foundation systems, it is presented a 3D finite element coupled formulation, in displacements and pressures, based on a state space approach using complex modal coordinates of the whole system. To assess the reliability of the developed model it is presented: i) a comparison of numerical and experimental results concerning the distributions of hydrodynamic pressures on dams with vertical and sloped upstream faces, as well as an analysis of the verified differences for analytical solution of Westergaard (valid for vertical upstream faces); and ii) the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of Cabril dam (double curvature arch), by performing a comparison between numerical and modal identified results, which were obtained from the experimental data collected by the continuous monitoring system of dynamic vibrations installed at the dam site. Natural frequencies and vibration modes were compared.
